Welcome to Early Years Foundation Stage

Hello and welcome to Oak Tree Primary and Nursery School. We are so excited that you have chosen our nursery and reception class for your child.

Our Intent

At Oak Tree we promote communication and language, physical development and personal, social  and emotional development as the golden threads that are woven into our every day curriculum. Through our broad, balanced and flexible curriculum  we facilitate and unlock a world full of potential for our children. We effectively plan experiences and learning environments that meet the needs of all our pupils and builds on their interests and fascinations. We provide a bespoke learning experience which is unique to every child and cohort and is based on their needs identified at baseline. We monitor emerging trends and together with our continual gap analysis we provide learning opportunities and experiences to promote curiosity, independence and enrich our children's vocabulary.

How we implement our intention

At Oak Tree we prioritise creating a language rich environment through the use of open-ended provision indoors and outdoors, through songs, nursery rhymes and stories and providing time for quality interactions between adults and between peers. Staff ensure that interactions are positive and progressive, allowing children to flourish and gather words at a pace in order to become confident communicators. We run effective communication programmes such as Early Talk Boost and NELI which enhance communication, language and expressive skills. Children are encouraged to become early readers through enjoyment of books and the systematic teaching of our RWI phonics programme.

Our curriculum is progressive and our curriculum overview plan is frequently improved to ensure it is well sequenced and responsive to the children's needs, interests and fascinations. The curriculum is planned to ensure that the unique child is considered and builds upon prior knowledge and experiences the child has already had in nursery and at home.

At Oak Tree we understand the importance of the parent  partnership and working closely with parents and carers to ensure the best outcomes for our children. We create that bond through our home visits for all of our new starters, regular parents meetings, workshops with our brushing buddies partners and parents receive regular updates through our parent portal Weduc. Parents will also receive termly knowledge organisers to inform them of what their child will be learning, key vocabulary will be explained, QR codes which link to our stories will also be available on the knowledge organisers. Weekly RWI (phonics) videos and handwriting sheets are sent home with the reception children to enable them to embed new learning.

How will we know what the children have learned?

As part of the learning and teaching process children are assessed through a balance of observation during play and some timely phonics and maths assessments. This is then used in conjunction with our new skills progression documents to determine where the child is with their learning and at the end of reception in relation to the Early Learning Goals.

We recognise that no job is more important than working with children in early years and every member of our staff team is committed to ensuring every child is given every opportunity to be able to learn. Let the learning journey begin!
